about
Tom Beckett taught drama in the Portland Public School system for over 20 years before he died unexpectedly in 2020. He was a beacon of inspiration and support for countless students, myself among them. Laura, Helen and I sang together under many names back in middle school, among them "The Three Canaries," "The Muddy Bottom Girls" (after a clumsy playground mishap), and finally "Sirens." The album cover is from an 8th grade production of Romeo and Juliet: you can see the joy emanating from all of our faces.
The last time I saw Mr. Beckett was over 10 years later, when he came to hear the three of us sing in a coffee shop. It meant so much to see him there, still unwavering in support for his former students.
I was lucky enough to get The Three Canaries back together for this memorial song.

lyrics
Tom,
You were gone too soon, but you know you best
I wish you calm and I wish you rest
I heard you headed for the sea
But not before you rescued me
Outside your door I slid to the floor
I was thirteen, I was scared of leaving
You sat with me and you told me
Change leads to growing, and it was ok to feel my feelings
It was safe to tell you all my stupid dreams
And the last time I saw you, you said you were proud of me
I watched you hold up all my dearest friends
And I wish we could’ve come to help you in the end
You were a pirate, an actor, a father, a friend
You were a teacher to me until the end
I heard you headed for the coast
I hope the tall ships took your ghost
They finally found your body
But you don’t only live in your body
You’re echoed in the words that we memorized on stage
You’re carried in our lives in the differences you made
You’re rooted in the heart of your family, your wife
You’ll spend your death as beloved as you were in life
I heard you headed for the sea
But not before you rescued me
